Outdoor Design Spotlight: Stout Design Build

Founded in Los Angeles, CA in 2000, Tom Stout’s Stout Design Build is a start-to-finish landscaping and remodeling business. With a lifelong passion for the outdoors, Tom is dedicated to creating beautiful, sustainable projects. In 1996, he began designing and building landscapes, and has been building and renovating homes in Los Angeles since 2006. The Stout team specializes in the New SoCal Landscape, a fusion of form, function, and sustainability.

Stout and his team have used Infratech heaters in a variety of homes in the Los Angeles area. We recently spoke with them about why they choose our heaters for their stunning spaces, how the Southern California environment plays into their design decisions, and which fall/winter trends they think have staying power.

What outdoor features are trending for fall/winter 2018?

Outdoor spaces that are multi-functional. For example, a space where the kids can play that won’t distract from the beauty of the yard, in addition to being elegant for entertaining clients or barbecuing and watching the game with friends. We’ve also been seeing more outdoor spaces include either a spa or plunge pool.

How do you design outdoor spaces to accommodate for seasonal transitions?

To accommodate the seasonal transitions we often include a pergola with Roman Shade, and of course, Infratech heaters!

Why does your firm prefer to use Infratech heaters in outdoor designs?

At Stout Design Build, we use Infratech heaters due to their streamlined look and quality.

How does the SoCal environment, specifically in Los Angeles, play into your design decisions?

There are a few things that stand out when designing outdoor living spaces in Los Angeles.  The first is that every inch of real estate is precious, so we employ some creative ways to turn front or side yards into outdoor living spaces. The second is a multi-functional space where you can unwind after driving in LA traffic, let the kids play or entertain clients and friends. Thirdly, for cool SoCal evenings, an Infratech heater is ideal.
